Studies on the Seed Propagation Technology of Ornamental Palmae

Abstract

To grasp the key technology of seed propagation of ornamental Palmae to establish an efficient system for seed breeding, comparative study of some ornamental Palmae adopted seed storage time, planting matrix, planting methods and transplanting period of seedlings on seed germination and seedling growth. The results showed that the appropriate storage time of Palm seed depend on the origin region, seed germination rate of Livistonea chinensis and Rhapis excelsa after harvesting the seeds without storage or short-term storage collected from the Singapore was significantly higher than those collected from the seeds of Fujian, and the germination rate of sand mixed with the wet storage for a period of time collected from Fujian was significantly higher than that collected from the seeds of Singapore. Palm plants suitable for the propagation matrix was mixed matrix No.2 composed the five coconut husk, the three sand and the two peat and mixed matrix No.1 composed the five coconut husk and the five sand. Planting method of palm plants of Archontophoenix alexandrae and Dypsis lutescens used to seedbed breeding or nursery tray breeding, and planting method of Phoenix dactylifera used to nursery bags breeding. But regardless of seedbed breeding and nursery tray breeding, transplanting period of seedlings for one-leaf stage more appropriate, the later of transplanting period of seedlings, the lower the survival rate of seedlings.The results of this study revealed the several technical problems of planting breeding process for ornamental Palmae, provided the technical basis for the establishment of the seedlings technical specification for ornamental Palmae
